Reconciliation

‘That God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.’ (2 Corinthians 5:19)

God calls us to be peacemakers. Stepping into this role requires us to put the needs of others before ourselves.

In the last presidential election in Burundi, we saw how the church stepped into this gap. Elections in Burundi have often been marred by violence. But the church was able to show another way.

In the lead up to the election, Tearfund ran workshops with church leaders on how to promote peace. ‘I believe that church leaders should be present in everyday life, engage and invest in the peaceful processes in their country,’ shares Rev Onesphore Ndayizigamiye, who attended the training. ‘They should not be afraid, but step up, because their role is very important.’

‘When different religious denominations work together for the same cause, their message is really powerful,’ adds Bishop Pontien Ribakare.

The election in Burundi was largely peaceful, praise God – a huge transformation from the last one.

In a society full of division, Lord, show me how I can begin to bridge the gap. I lay down my own prejudices and fears. Give me opportunities to heal and reconcile for your glory. Amen.
