For Day 6 of Advent and the second window in our calendar, we're featuring the beloved carol Good Christians All Rejoice, recorded for you by The Longniddry Wassailers.

Rev Dr Robin Hill, minister at Gladsmuir and Longniddry in East Lothian and musical director for the Heart and Soul Swing Band, brought the group together especially for the Advent calendar.

Robin tells us:

"The Longniddry Wassailers came into being specially for this video then quickly disbanded before they could do any more harm. The quartet had great fun working up the old Christmas carol, "Good Christians, all rejoice" (CH322) and filming the video in front of a large woollen audience.

"The group is made up of a pair of pairs in the form of two fathers and two sons. From left they are: William Clarke on clarinet, Robin Hill on alto sax, Michael Hill on tenor sax and Douglas Clarke on baritone sax.

"Three of the four—Douglas, Michael and Robin— are members of the Heart and Soul Swing Band. Their guest MVP (Most Valued Player) William Clarke, is an Advanced Higher Music student at Preston Lodge High School, Prestonpans, and a member of the church band at Longniddry.

"Good Christians, all rejoice" is a much-loved Germanic folk carol dating back maybe 600-700 years, while its tune, In dulci jubilo, is of a similar age, having appeared in a Wittenberg hymnbook of 1535 … though not necessarily with saxes in mind."
