Sanctuary Foundation Advent Devotional Day 20

Around the globe some 100 million people are classed as refugees or displaced people. In their desperation to flee war, famine, tyranny and terror they leave their homes and cross borders to seek safety and asylum.

In the Christmas story the Magi crossed borders in search of a foreign child they could honour as King. They contrast sharply with King Herod’s power-hungry insecurity which tried to capitalise on the news brought him by the Magi, and ended up driving Jesus away across another border.

“Joseph got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt”.

Jesus, not even 2 years old, ends up a refugee. He has to flee in the middle of the night to seek sanctuary in a strange country and rely on the kindness of strangers. I am sure Mary and Joseph missed their family terribly as they struggled to cope, not knowing if they were safe.

For those of us who have the luxury of homes we feel safe in, who claim to trust our lives to one who was a refugee, what can we do to extend sanctuary to others who need it now?
