Day 18 - Let's #EndTheCareCliff together
It’s December 18th! Let’s #EndtheCareCliff together.
For most of us our 18th is the birthday we celebrate, the day that adulthood officially starts and we gently ease into independence.
For children in care though, it means something different. Their 18th birthday is the day they become independent overnight, with little or no support.
We call this sudden drop in support the #CareCliff, because young care leavers that Become works with have described the time as a “cliff edge” or “like being on death row, counting down the days” until they turn 18 and have to move into accommodation on their own, pay rent, buy a cooker, carpet and curtains that fit, sort and organise household bills, eat well on a small budget, keep up their job or college/uni course, be young and enjoy a social life.
No young person should leave care before they’re ready. That’s why alongside young people, we are calling on the Government to #EndTheCareCliff and put a stop to the abrupt end to care many young people face.
Now is a critical time as, following the Independent Review of Children’s Social Care, the Government will be making changes to the care system. We need your help to amplify the voices of young people and help get their message in front of the new Children’s Minister, Claire Coutinho.
